Kiore are omnivores. They seem to eat everything we eat and then some.
They eat most parts of plants including fruit, seeds, flowers, shoots, leaves, roots, and tubers. Maori used to take special precautions with their food stores to prevent kiore eating them.

As omnivores they also eat meat. They are known to eat a wide range of animals including earthworms, centipedes, catapillers, ants, beetles, weevils, cicadas, snails, spiders, lizards and birds.
People also have been known to eat the kiore. The Maori used to regard them as a delicasy especially at the times of year when fruit was plentiful as the flesh was supposed to be especially sweet then. Apparently they make a good stew.
