On New Hosting, Again

I've restored as much of the 2005/2006 versions of this blog as I could find on one back-up. I think there are other backups from later in 2006/7 I could get back but I need to find them and am working on that. It's significant that the old blog data I restored finished on a bold statement that it was now on new hosting and looking forward to the future.

New Home

Well it took a lot longer than expected, but Kiore.com is finally in it's new home.

Unfortunately we've lost a bit of content on the way, mumble mumble mumble. Hopefully we can recover what we need over time.

Nutrition

Kiore are omnivores. They seem to eat everything we eat and then some.

They eat most parts of plants including fruit, seeds, flowers, shoots, leaves, roots, and tubers. Maori used to take special precautions with their food stores to prevent kiore eating them.

Migrating birds drop in on Auckland

Another bumper breeding season for Cook’s petrel on Hauturu (Little Barrier Island) has juvenile birds inadvertently crash landing around Auckland.

Bird rescue centres in Auckland have had a number of the young birds, which are fledging and leaving their burrows, handed in over the past week.

Depression of tree recruitment on New Zealand's northern offshore islands

D. J. Campbell and I. A. E. Atkinson of Ecological Research Associates have publiched a paper studying the effects of kiore on tree seeds and seedlings.

They discovered negative effects in eleven out of seventeen species of coastal trees.
